42 Movie – ’42’ Gets The Jackie Robinson Story Legal historian Arnold Rampersad is “a stickler for the truth,” but he finds that — with one exception — the 2013 biopic about Robinson’s involvement in Major League Baseball is true.
As we close out 2013, we’re looking back at some of the year’s “true story inspired” movies and looking at the truth-to-inspiration ratio. It turned out,
42 Movie
— a biopic chronicling Jackie Robinson’s 1947 encounter with Major League Baseball — has received mostly positive reviews.
Is An Honest Yet Imperfect Portrayal Of Baseball Legend Jackie Robinson
Arnold Rampersad, an English professor at Stanford University who wrote Robinson’s biography, said the film is true.
. Arnold Rampersad said Rickey “wants to intervene in the moral history of the country.” D. Stevens/Warner Bros. hide title
In the film, Rickey presents himself as a professional – “I want to win games, I want to make money” – but sometimes he says, “I’m a Methodist; Robinson is a Methodist; God is a Methodist. So he shows that there is a religious tradition. But I want to say, above all, he wanted to influence the moral history of the country as Lincoln had – to a degree.
In fact, he was retained by Branch Rickey to follow Robinson. It represents many numbers in the press, and their names are not mentioned in the movie, and some are unlucky – people like Lester Rodney of

, Communist newspapers argued for a long time, loudly, about the need for unity. But Wendell Smith is important, and he does a great job in the movie bringing perspective to the story.
The branch Rickey was in charge of [St. Louis] Cardinals for 20 years before coming to Brooklyn in 1942 – I don’t think he would have tried this for the Cardinals. … Brooklyn is the right place, and the right time, too, especially because of the changes America went through during World War II.
Rickey did, in fact, appear to sign Robinson to a non-violent contract, but he was given a three-year contract. … Rickey was well aware of the fact that Robinson had been sued [for fighting while in the military] … so he knew that he had hired a fighter.
I don’t think [the MLB merger] should have stopped. First, Rickey had already signed at least two black players, so from the start he saw Robinson as the first of many players to come to the Dodgers. And I think we have to admit, when we look at Robinson, that a lot of people think he’s not physically capable of being a basketball player. It wasn’t his best sport – his best sport was basketball, if not football. He was surprised at how well he did, really, because of that fact.
Chadwick Boseman Gave ’42’ Directors A Hard Time So The Film Would Be More Authentic
I am a person who likes to be precise in representation. There is content in the created video. … [For example] there’s a picture of Ed Charles, who later played with the Mets, as a boy in Daytona Beach. [In this film] Robinson threw him a baseball, and he put his ear on the train tracks while Robinson’s train was moving. And Ed Charles himself [said]: Well, that’s not true, but it’s all true. I was inspired by Robinson. I went to the football field to watch him practice. I have a separate video review planned for this post but due to the recent, unfortunate loss of Chadwick Boseman, I think my time would be better spent watching one of his movies. Most of you probably relate to Boseman
, but this is not the movie I want. Although it is most suitable for the king of Wakanda, it is also the best to describe the famous basketball player Jackie Robinson.
Jackie Robinson became the first black Major League Baseball player to play in the major leagues in the 20th century. Some people say he is the first black professional engineer but I am here to tell you they are wrong. Fun fact!: Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first and played for the Toledo Blue Stockings in 1884. There were many other black major leaguers after him, too. But the following year in 1887 after many racial conflicts, the leaders of the League of Nations agreed to no longer register black people. The color barrier was broken again in April 1947 when Jackie Robinson signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers, from then on first base wore the famous number 42. After that, baseball changed forever.
The sports drama that shows Robinson’s transition to Major League Baseball while battling many odds will make your blood boil. Brooklyn Dodgers owner Rickey (Harrison Ford) hired Robinson to play first for the minor league team, the Montreal Royals, and then the Brooklyn Dodgers. His teammates signed a petition saying they would not play with Robinson, some coaches protested against him when he was about to jump, and hotels refused to help the team because of Robinson. It’s disgusting. But he fought back the best way he knew how – by being a good basketball player. The Dodgers ended up winning the pennant that year and Robinson was awarded Rookie of the Year.
Jackie Robinson’s Faith Missing From ’42’ Movie
Boseman is so, so good in this role. He had so much emotion behind his tough exterior that when you saw him break out in the first game against the Pirates, it was painful to watch. It makes you sympathize with the actor and when an actor can do that, you know he’s good. Ford is great, great in his role as always. He is almost invisible because he wears prosthetics and his voice is very hoarse. I love watching the development of the Dodgers players as they start to realize what they are and deal with the hate Robinson gets all the time. It’s not funny when it happens to you, is it? I love the development of the characters.
I also like football movies. I may be biased as I grew up around baseball but I think so
Sports movie. But I also think it’s a good movie even if you don’t like the game of basketball. Because this movie is about bigger things than basketball. It is a depiction of institutionalized racism and how a black actor breaks the color barrier in a white drama because of how good he is. We as listeners are taught that racism is passed down from generation to generation and that is why it is unacceptable to discriminate against anyone. Ultimately, the color of our skin does not determine our worth, abilities, or who we are as people.
Chadwick Boseman brings Jackie Robinson to life and does his story justice. And, I know most of you are used to it

But I encourage you to look at his works. I saw him on screen for the first time in 2013 and I never forgot him. An insanely talented actor and such a lovely person, he disappeared from this world too soon (coincidentally he died on Jackie Robinson Day). The undeniable impact it has on audiences will last forever. May he rest in peace Tsvv Ngu Xim will have to wait another week. So today’s post will take on one of the most famous athletes in history. The question is, is it interesting enough to have a movie written about it?
Source: (from IMDB) The story of Jackie Robinson’s life and his historic signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team manager Rickey.
About: Writer (and director of this film) Brian Helgeland, the only writer to win an Oscar (for L.A. Confidential) and a Razzie (for The Postman) in the same year. When following a script, he sometimes slipped into the director’s chair, as when he directed Heath Ledger in the 2001 film, A Knight’s Tale (which he also wrote – which grossed 2.5 million). Helgeland is one of Hollywood’s top screenwriters, reimposing multi-million dollar scripts when crap needs editing (usually). But this is a project he wants to be involved in from start to finish. The film will be released on Friday and stars Harrison Ford as Jackie Robinson in the lead role.
Man there is a lot to talk about here. And I’m not talking about the screenplay. First, sports performance is difficult to withdraw. Football movies don’t make money. So seeing this explosion all over my TV and my neighbors makes me think we are talking about at least a 70 million dollar business. On the budget of the film, which is probably 60 million, which means that the film should be removed 130 million.
