Arctic Movie – While we’re getting a little warmer, dust off the grill and prepare the air conditioner for summer – here comes Arctic, a movie that will make you feel both lonely and completely frozen.
Mads Mikkelsen is the Overgard, and we meet him after he crashes a light plane in the middle of the Arctic. He’s stuck, trying to figure out how to survive (luckily he seems to be a pretty good fisherman), how to attract people while avoiding the attention of polar bears, but finally how to find help.

With his task now doubly difficult, the ‘Arctic’ is a sign of an uphill battle, albeit with a foot of snow.
If you like survival movies – and I’m talking about Robert Redford in “All is Lost,” Matt Damon in “The Martian” or Sam Rockwell in Duncan Jones’ “The Moon” – you’ll love this.
Probably no more than 5 words are spoken in the entire film, instead focusing on her lead delivering her inner monologue in a compelling and engaging way.

It’s no coincidence that all the actors in these films are incredibly expressive and watchable – because even when the plot is doing everything you’d expect, you’re still rooting for them, rooting for the hardships they go through and rallying around them at every juncture.
Mads is obviously fantastic. You wouldn’t watch this if you weren’t a fan, but here we have a heartbreaking, desperate performance, but also one that is eternally optimistic and charitable.
Filmed in Iceland, not a shot is missing – Joe Penna did a fantastic job of capturing the most beautiful scenes – and I’m dying to see how he did some of the stunning scenes – real talent.
The plot is much more interesting than the country it captures, but this very stoic Nordic tale of resilience and perseverance is a treat. Arctic Blast (2010)
I will happily watch Mads Mikkelsen sit in silence for an hour and a half. Whether he’s playing a blue-eyed Bond villain, an alcoholic teacher or the man who designed the Death Star, the Danish actor imbues all of his performances with a kind of violence that often overwhelms the need for any form of dialogue. That’s why he’s the perfect actor for Arctic , a living ice drama in which his wild protagonist has no one to talk to but himself, a barely awake helicopter co-pilot and a very angry polar bear.
Directed by Joe Penna, a former YouTuber making his debut, Arctic was originally shown at Cannes 2018, but then flew under the radar thanks to a limited theatrical release. However, those looking for it will be treated to Mikkelsen’s best performance to date. He’s great in The Hunt and Another Round, but here’s a role that allows him to reach new emotional depths, expressing loneliness, fear, hope and despair with the subtlest of facial expressions—even when His quest for salvation is desperate. takes a more violent turn. He’s so natural and believable that you’d be forgiven for thinking he’s actually stuck in this frozen hell.
All we know about his character is that his name is Overgård and that he is a pilot of some description. But when we meet him at the beginning of the film, it’s immediately clear that he won’t be flying much, because his plane crashed in a remote part of the Arctic. We don’t know how long he’s been there, but long enough to make a nice little shelter out of the wreckage of his plane.
There is something wonderfully therapeutic about Overgård’s secluded life. In his solitude, he established a respectable daily routine, catching fish from holes he had dug in the ice, sending out distress signals on a portable transmitter and a giant SOS sign carved into the snow. If it weren’t for the constant threat of cold and death, some travel agencies might advertise this as an idyllic escape.

In one of my favorite scenes, Overgård pulls a large arctic trout out of his ice hole and cooks it with salvaged instant noodles. It’s the best, warmest meal he’s had in years, and witnessing Mikkelsen’s utter disbelief at its deliciousness is something magical.
However, like a cute little fish, the plot quickly turns sour when a helicopter — which should be his ticket to extremes — crashes right in front of him. The pilot is dead, but the co-pilot (played by Maria Thelma Smáradóttir) is barely holding on, although she is unconscious and has a large wound in her stomach. With medical deficiencies to keep her alive, Overgård makes the executive decision to strap her new friend into a harness and head for a remote outpost in the north, knowing full well that the perilous journey will most likely bring them the same fate as Jack. Nicholson at the end of The Shining.
It’s a relentless mission, reminiscent of the kind of suffering we witnessed in 127 Hours and The Returner. There’s even a moment that seems directly inspired by the previous one, which comes as a brutal twist of fate mere seconds after Overgård is given a glimmer of hope. As for the final set, Mikkelsen isn’t sleeping inside the corpse of a frozen horse, he’s coming face to face with a real, real polar bear. No CGI or practical effects required. In my estimation, that makes him infinitely more difficult than Leonardo DiCaprio.
It’s amazing to think that Arctic is Penn’s first feature film. He’s so confident in every decision he makes, and the twists are so perfectly executed that you just can’t take your eyes off the screen. While the great performance does most of the heavy lifting (sometimes really), this is still an incredibly honest and heartbreaking exploration of the human will to survive, delivered to the world thanks to a refreshing lack of dialogue. If someone told you this was the work of an award-winning director, you’d probably believe them.
