The Florida Department of Education, led by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, rejected an advanced placement course on African American studies. The decision has sparked a wave of backlash across the country — from lawmakers in other states to labor unions and even a possible lawsuit.
“The governor should not have the right to tell the facts about US history,” said Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat, said in a letter to the College Board, which develops AP courses that help high school students across the country earn college credit. .

Pringle, along with more than 28,000 others, signed a petition Thursday afternoon asking the Florida State Board of Education to approve the course.
“It is clear that Fl. Gov. DeSantis is using black students as political pawns in an effort to build power and conservative outrage, and the Florida State Board of Education (SBE) has long enabled him to do so,” the petition reads.

Illinois Governor Pritzker wrote to College Board CEO David Coleman asking the institution to “preserve the fundamental right to an education that is not governed by the political glory of Governor DeSantis and the whims of Florida Republicans.”
“I urge you to maintain your reputation as an educational institution dedicated to advanced students and resist political pressure to rewrite our nation’s true, sometimes unsavory history,” Pritzker added.

Florida State Sen. Chevrin Jones also shared his disapproval by tweeting that Florida is a place where “you #DontSayBlack,” a reference to the controversial education law that bans discussion of sexual orientation starting in third grade.

Rep. Richie Torres, Democrat of New York, echoed the same sentiment on Twitter, saying, “Florida went from don’t say gay to don’t say black.”
Meanwhile, in schools where the pilot program is underway, both students and teachers are grateful for the curriculum.
“We’re talking about the arts,” said Alex Janke, who teaches at a predominantly black high school in Milwaukee that offers the program.
“Education is about finding truth, not imposing ideology or pushing a political agenda,” DeSantis tweeted Monday.

After the state rejected the course, the College Board announced Tuesday that it will release a new, revised version of the course on Feb. 1, the first day of Black History Month.

During Tuesday’s White House press briefing, President Trump said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is a “great governor” who “knows exactly what he’s doing” in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
Vice President Mike Pence praised DeSantis, adding that the Republican governor “has been taking decisive action from the beginning.”
But according to public health experts, thousands of health care workers and an ongoing lawsuit, DeSantis’ leadership has been woefully inadequate.
Florida has been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak, with state health officials announcing 600 more confirmed cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of infections in the Sunshine State to more than 6,700. Officials say 85 Floridians have died from Covid-19.
