Phakeng Named As New Chancellor Of University Of Free State – The University of Cape Town (South Africa) is delighted to announce that Professor Mamokgeti Phakeng, Vice-Chancellor and inspirational leader, will join the University as its first Distinguished Visiting Professor (BIVP) her in Autumn 2021.
During this one-year appointment, Professor Phakeng will engage with our academic community in various ways and will also participate in a series of public lectures that will be recorded and shared online. By hosting Professor Phakeng, we hope to learn and be inspired by her knowledge, approaches and ethos. We will work together to build and improve our research efforts, particularly in mathematics education, as well as develop our institutional partnership with the University of Cape Town (UCT) more broadly. We expect that the majority of these visiting professorships will take place due to the ongoing global pandemic. However, we look forward to welcoming Professor Phakeng as soon as it is safe and practical to do so.

The University is delighted and honored to welcome Professor Mamokgeti Phakeng as our first Distinguished Visiting Professor. She has established herself as an inspirational figure in mathematics education and university leadership in South Africa. I already enjoy working closely with Prof. Phakeng as members of our important strategic partnership -UCT and of the world network of universities. It will be a pleasure for our entire community to benefit from Mamokgeti’s expertise, energy and vision in the coming year.
Being appointed as the University’s first Distinguished Visiting Professor is a great honor not only for me personally but also for African scholarship. It is an opportunity to share my work in multilingual mathematics classrooms in South Africa. On a wider scale, I believe that this appointment will strengthen the relationship between two institutions of higher education: the University of Cape Town, the best university in Africa, and the university ranked among the top 60 in the world for research and higher education institutions. The landscape of education around the world, and more specifically the landscape of leadership in higher education, has changed drastically in recent years and will change even more in the near future. I hope that this new relationship will give me the opportunity to share my leadership journey with my colleagues. And I look forward to learning from them in turn.
Professor Phakeng began her tenure as UCT Vice-Chancellor in July 2018. Previously, she served as UCT’s Vice-Chancellor for Research and Internationalization from January 2017. and a National Foundation Rated Scientist of B1 Research who has published more than 80 research papers and five edited volumes. She has been invited to give more than 40 keynote/plenary lectures at international conferences and as a visiting professor at universities around the world. She has won numerous awards for her research and community work, including the Order of the Baobab (Silver) awarded to her by the President of South Africa in April 2016. In August 2014, the magazine of the CEO named her as the most powerful woman in Africa; In August 2016, she was awarded the Distinguished Businesswoman of the Year Award in the Education Sector. She broke new ground in her illustrious career as the first woman to hold a number of prestigious positions, including being elected as the first female President of the Convocation University of the Witwatersrand, which heads the Education Association of Mathematics in South Africa (AMESA). as its first national president and the first black South African researcher to co-chair a study commissioned by the International Commission on Mathematics Instruction. The Distinguished Visiting Professorship builds on Professor Phakeng’s existing relationship with the university, which awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2019 in recognition of her leadership role in mathematics education in South Africa following the apartheid. Professor Phakeng is the first awardee under the Illustious Visiting Professorship scheme, a new initiative of the University’s proud heritage that brings world-leading academics from around the world to our institution, hosted by our own illustrious scholars. The scheme is within the International Research Partnerships portfolio, which has a variety of schemes on offer for traveling researchers designed to support international collaborations at different scales.
This professorship consists of a mix of virtual and personal activities. We look forward to welcoming Professor Phakeng on an extended visit to engage with our researchers, our senior management team and our wider community.
