In Shotgun Wedding, Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) bring their sweet but very strange families together for the ultimate destination wedding, just as the couple begins to get cold feet. And if that wasn’t enough of a threat to the team, suddenly everyone’s lives are in danger when the entire team is taken hostage. “‘Til Death Do Us Part” takes on a whole new meaning in this hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure in which Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones—if they don’t kill each other first. Be honest. When you hear that Jennifer Lopez has a new movie, you just let the news wash over you unexpectedly. We live in a time where a film has to be really special to do well in theaters, and really special Lopez films are few and far between.

That goes double for this new film titled Shotgun Wedding. That’s right: another Lopez wedding movie. One more piece of fatty cartilage in a soup that already contains The Wedding Planner, Monster-in-Law and (God help us all) Marry Me. So you’ve got the movie tucked away in the back of your mind. After all, this will be the third movie you’ve seen on a long-haul flight.

But wait. Because, as anyone who’s seen the trailer will attest, Shotgun Wedding might be Lopez’s best film of all time. In the trailer, Lopez plays a beautiful bride on a beautiful tropical island, happily in love with Josh Duhamel despite all the misguided obstacles of her future mother-in-law Jennifer Coolidge. In fact, her relationship is strong enough to withstand the arrival of her showboating ex, played by Lenny Kravitz. Everything is beautiful and perfect. And then the last two minutes of the trailer happen.

BAM! Some longshoremen stab a wedding planner to death, each blow throwing a sickly, wet spit into his torso. The mercenaries – led by a figure in a menacing Slipknot mask – storm the wedding, firing machine guns into the air to terrorize the guests. Fearing for their lives, Duhamel and Lopez devise a survival plan. They literally set their attackers on fire. They detonated the bodies of several others with hand grenades. Coolidge went on a rampage with an assault rifle. At the end of the trailer, it’s heavily implied that Lopez decapitates someone with her wedding cake knife.

I haven’t seen the entire movie, so this is just a guess, but you have to assume the last shot of the movie is Lopez and Duhamel sitting together in stunned silence, trying and failing to make sense of the atrocity they committed. With their eyes closed, they spend the rest of their lives looking at the faces of all their victims and begging for mercy. Anyway, Shotgun Wedding has two thumbs up all round.

The best thing about the Shotgun Wedding trailer is how abrupt the direction changes are. One minute it’s a syrupy wedding movie, the next it’s a mid-90s Steven Seagal movie Is this the most abrupt U-turn in movie trailer history? No, because that accolade still belongs to Spies in Disguise, the 2019 animated spy movie in which Will Smith inexplicably turns into a dove. But it’s a close-up thing.

Look, everyone has their favorite type of Lopez movie. Some prefer previous critically acclaimed works, such as Selena and Out of Sight. Some prefer the extravagant glamor of the hustler. Some may even prefer him for his dutiful education of the entire romcom genre. But my favorite type of Lopez movie, though I didn’t know it until now, is the one where she goes on a crazy First Blood-esque killing spree through the woods in a wedding dress. It’s action. It’s comedy. It’s drama. Aside from an elaborate dance break, Shotgun Wedding has everything you could want from a Jennifer Lopez car. As such, I’m willing to upgrade it to a second movie that I’ll watch on a long-haul flight. Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel are finally walking down the aisle. The actors will appear together in the upcoming rom-com “Shotgun Wedding”, which has been in the works for a long time Prime Video released the film’s second trailer on January 11, and it highlights the film’s supporting cast, particularly Jennifer Coolidge as Duhamel’s character’s hilarious mother.

Written by Mark Hammer, the film will stream on Prime Video next year and follows Darcy (Lopez) and Tom (Duhamel), whose family is held hostage at their destination wedding. According to a Prime Video description, the comedy is a “hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure in which Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones — if they don’t kill each other first.”

The film’s trailer dropped on October 4 and delivers all the jokes and gags promised, plus fans’ first look at Jennifer Coolidge in action as Duhamel’s hysterical mother. Oh, and a rousing ready-made family rendition of Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be.”

It wasn’t difficult for the movie’s stars to play husband and wife, as Duhamel and Lopez both recently got married in real life: the former to Audra Mae in September, and the latter to on-again, off-again love Ben Affleck last summer.

Starring Lopez and Duhamel are (new Emmy winner) Jennifer Coolidge, Sonia Braga, Chech Marin, Selena Tan and D’Arcy Carden. Callie Hernandez, Desmin Borges, Steve Coulter and Alberto Isaacs also star, as does rocker Lenny Kravitz.

Armie Hammer was originally set to appear in the role of Duhamel, but it was announced in January 2021 that the character had been recast due to allegations against Hammer, Variety reported at the time.
