What Is Lent? Exploring The Christian Observance
Lent is a season of simple living. As the whole Church prepares for the great celebration of Christ’s Paschal Mystery in the Easter Triduum, Catholics make a special effort to pray, repent and do good works. Each day of the forty days of fasting is an opportunity to live simply and prepare for Easter. In this article, you will find printable Lenten activities and prayers that will help children in your religious education program understand and carry out Lenten practices. Downloads are available in Spanish and English. Season of Lent The liturgical year is marked by special seasons: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Triduum, Easter, and Ordinary Time. Unlike our traditional 365-day calendar, the purpose of the annual liturgical calendar is not to mark the passage of time, but rather to celebrate and understand the whole mystery of Jesus Christ, from his incarnation and birth to his ascension, today. Pentecost and anticipation of the return to glory. During a year, the paschal mystery – the passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus – is seen from different angles, in different lights. The liturgical year begins on the first Sunday of Advent, which usually occurs in early December or late November, and ends on the Feast of Christ the King. Great Lent begins on February 22. Lent is a season of preparation for the great celebration of Easter. Lenten activities for children During the six-week season of Lent, the Church encourages us to engage in three spiritual practices – prayer, penance and almsgiving. To help catechists and parish leaders in preparing and celebrating with children during the holy season, he is pleased to offer a number of inspirational and practical resources. We hope the Lenten activities and prayers available will support your ministry efforts this season! #1 Experience Cube Lent Activity Teach children that Lent is a special season that prepares us for Easter with an interactive activity. With the Living Lent Cube Activity, children will consider what they can do to make Lent a time of simple living. During the season of Lent, students will roll the dice to determine an activity they will “experience”. #2 Renew your baptism during Lent activities Baptism provides the key to Lent. In the fourth and fifth centuries, the Church developed liturgies to help those who wanted to become Christians. The last forty days of this journey of faith, the “forty-day retreat” before Baptism, became what we now call Lent. As part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), Lent is the time for catechumens to continue their preparation for baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. While some prepare to celebrate the sacrament of baptism for the first time, all Catholics are asked to renew their baptism during Lent. It is time for those of us who have already been baptized to affirm what this sacrament means in our lives today. This Lenten worksheet will help young children practice renewing their baptism during Lent. #3 The Lenten Road to Easter Lessons Lent is a time of preparation for the celebration of Christ’s death and Resurrection at Easter. Lasting forty days – from Ash Wednesday to the evening of Maundy Thursday – the season draws us to the light of Christ. Reality of Faith When you hear the word Lent, what image comes to mind? Penance, purple, fish, ashes, fasting, sacrifice? It is these images that many Catholics associate with Lent. Our idea of what Lent is will be closer to the ecclesiastical meaning of these seasons if the first thing that comes to our mind is the image of new life – Baptism! Faith Fact that explains Lent by a catechist to share with high school students. #5 Lenten Word Search Puzzle As the children in your catechetical program learn that Lent is a season of preparation, share a Lenten word search activity. Download and distribute activity sheets to students. Read the instructions out loud. Ask volunteers to read the words in the box aloud. Explain to the children that they must find and circle each word in the puzzle. Words can be found vertically, horizontally, diagonally and backwards. You may want the children to work with a partner to explain the meaning of each word during Lent. #6 Daily Activities at Home for the Lenten Calendar Designed for families, the 2023 Lenten calendar in English and Spanish offers a scripture to think about and a suggestion for action, prayer, or contemplation for each day of the Lenten season. Download it and share it in your parish. #8 Lent Prayer Initiative Four Prayers The season of Lent encourages us to step outside of ourselves to serve others and learn what it really means to live according to the love of Jesus. Encourage children to use prayer to strengthen their determination to participate in Lenten practices and serve others.
